Texasotan

I don't know where she entered, but I just noticed "texasotan" who is, apparently, Katie. Welcome.

"Consider the lilies of the field..."

Here is a picture of Holly with some Australian calla lilies. Holly, do they grow wild over there?? We recieved an email, and Amy has arrived. For now they are in the same house.

Dinner With Some Lindmans

I'm glad dad often felt it necessary to take pictures at the table. I believe this picture was taken almost exactly 34 years ago.

All Dressed Up

I just did some more scanning tonight. For the next couple weeks we'll have pictures from the early '70s.

This video is kind of fun. Just click on the image to see the video.

On The Same Boat

Notice Dan with his Jeremiah Johnson beard.

Abraham Lincoln beard

Christoffer is home for Thanksgiving week after working for almost 10 straight weeks, 4 weeks in Kotzebue and 6 weeks at Pogo Mine. I guess there is a shortage of electricians in Alaska.

He calls this beard his Abraham Lincoln beard.

Here he is looking at the internet. What website is that???

More celebrating!

It's time to get the "ball rolling" for Christmas Eve. It sounds like we have a good thing going but we sure will miss the southern Stynsberg's. Here's the list of guests at this time: Stephen, Dan Lindstrom's, Dean and Kurt, Paul Stynsberg's, Joe Tucker's, & Ralph Carlson's.

We will provide:
Swedish Meatballs (unless that is on the menu on the 17th and everyone wants something else) Let me know!

Please consider what is important in the Stynsberg tradition and what you want to bring. It would be great to have some variety for dessert, too.

Junior helps on dry run turkey day...

We often butcher a few turkeys on the Saturday before Thanksgiving. This was Junior's first year to help and he really got into it today!

All In The Family

Dean and Kurt's kitten's sister doesn't have as wild a life. She hasn't been outdoors since we brought her home, but she also seems to have an attraction to nests.

Mother hen?

Our new kitten -- now about 11 weeks old, seems to think he's a mother hen...

Hot sauce

Don't let me turn into Greg!!

A while back, I bought a bottle of hot sauce after trying some of that brand at the Southbergers. Every so often, I put a little on my food.

Tonight, Kurt made some apple fritters. (These were the leftovers. They don't look as good as the other ones.) I never thought of hot sauce on dessert, but I tried some and it was pretty good!

Uh-oh...

Wild Game Feast

Thank you Mark and Lois Ann for the salmon you brought down this summer. Since we have many friends that are hunters and fishermen we decided to host a Wild Game Feast. The only stipulation when I sent out the invites was that the guests had to like wild game as we wouldn't be serving another meat. We feasted on salmon, catfish, one dish with venison, duck and pheasant cooked together, wild rice and pheasant dish, rice with beans, coleslaw, tossed salad and dessert. We enjoyed the company especially because we had never been with this particular group altogether before. Two of the couples are rather new to our church. We laughed all night with the stories our friends told!

He may look sleepy, but he's very happy.

Scanning slides

Well, i have figured out how this scanner works now, and hopefully there will be some old slides to add to the blog.

This slide has March 1989 for a printed date. It looks like Como Zoo. It usually took me many many months to get film developed. I sure appreciate the digital instantaneous photography.

The problem with old photos is trying to get them in some kind of order. Ours are more disorganized than organized.

Peter's Final Cross Country Meet

Congrats to Alyssa! We're proud of Peter too. We were at the North High cross country banquet last night. When he started running in middle school many others had more natural talent, but through hard work and perseverance he finished strong. His team won their conference meet and he was all conference. They were fourth at sectionals where the three teams above them ended up all being in the top ten in state. He was a co-captain and at the banquet his team voted him the MVP of the season.

Meat Market

Dean, inquiring minds are wanting to know what some of these various meats are. Can you help us?

Test Your Strength Here

I posted a silly test a few posts back (for Paul only). Here is a test I take very seriously. I have been following the work of the social scientist Martin Seligman for years. Through careful research over 20 years they have concluded that a key ingredient in a happy life is to know what moral virtues you have been gifted with and then structuring your life so you can practice those virtes on the job, in the home etc. . . things like courage, patience, temperence, love, wisdom. This test takes a good 40 minutes. I'd be curious to see what virtues the test says are your strengths. If you show me yours (in the comment section) I'll show you mine.
Take the test here.
You can learn a little more his ideas and take other tests here.
This is my first attempt to use links. It's easier than I thought it would be.

Abstract tee-shirt design

This is a new tee-shirt design we came up with tonight. It is being modeled in front of Lois Ann's beautiful quilt. It was designed by a team of designers: the teamate who shot the puck in the air, my chin had to be held correctly for the red color to accidentally spill on various places on the white background, and the nurse who spread the red with a water sprinkling device. Notice the various shades of pink and the red dot, and then the cloud like hard edge bottom. This should be a winning design.

What's My Prize?

Paul has won a few contests against me and I owe him a few. So this is for Paul only. Nobody else can try this: take a test to see which race of Middle Earth you belong to. According to the test I would be happiest as an ent - "old as the mountains" - ouch!

Alyssa's Final Swim Meet

Alyssa and her coach shed a few tears yesterday - this was Alyssa's last swim meet as a Roseau Ram. It was the section meet and she did very well placing 6th in the IM and 8th in the butterfly. She finishes with many happy memories including a trip to state two years ago as part of a relay team and being a co-captain last year and this year. All in all it's been a great ride.

My new printer arrived a couple days ago. I'm happy with it. It's fast, it does a good job with photos, and also has automatic two-sided printing.

Today's question: Why didn't Greg hear Dad say "cheese"?

Christmas

Dear family,

It's time to begin preparing for the Christmas Eve gathering if we are going to have another gathering besides the gathering at the Stynsberg's on the 17th (I think that's the date). Please let me know what's happening in each of your lives. I had called Greg and Denise prior to the email that came out regarding their plans for Christmas. I didn't know if they wanted the gathering or we would have it. Anyway, they are planning something there.

Paul and Faith, are you coming down to spend time with your sister and family on Christmas Eve as you have for several years? With Christmas falling on Sunday we will be changing our format somewhat also, because we will have church prior to gathering with family. We honestly don't know what is happening with our own children as yet because they haven't informed us.

Does someone want to send an invite to the blog to Ryan? His email address is : pendulum217@hotmail.com.

This will be a little different from the letter on email because....

Temperature graphs

You all wanted to see this, didn't you??? Notice how wildly the weather swings in the winter. The dark grey is the normal temperature. The light grey being the extremes. Red is what it was. Global warming would be good for Alaska and for beautiful Cook Inlet beaches. By the way, why do they always talk about Captain Cook in Hawaii and not much about him coming to Alaska?

Big Bird

Skating with Ivy

We have had a few weeks of cold weather and the lakes have about 6" of ice. When i woke up today from still working nights, our dog Ivy took me skating. The ice made some scary sounds as the ice made some long cracks from shore to shore.

Ivy wishes she had her own set of dog skates. She also wishes she had a real hockey stick instead of this old tree branch.

The e Round Robin

The e Round R
obin
Hey guys, I don't know what I'm doing so this is kind of a test. I was looking at some of the photos this evening and they had dates from February of this year, for example. Mark, did you start this blog that long ago? I thought those Philipine pictures were added just recently as in the last few days. For you, Daniel, you said you were going to eliminate my names but they came up and there is still some confusion. We can talk about it later if this goes through.

Caught in the Act

Paul showed Chloe at Halloween. This is George at Christmas trying to act like he'd done nothing wrong chasing the cat under the tree.

Through Another Lens

... and this is the picture Dad was taking at that moment in time. 'Probably one of his favorites.

One of my favorite photos...

Here's another photo from the Philippines trip. This is one of my favorite photos!

The rice terraces were amazing--hundreds of years in the making/maintaining. The water comes from the top. Then they make little rivulets that allow the water to trickle down from terrace to terrace. No water pumps needed!

Jeepney Mania

Perhaps the most distinguishing feature of the Philippines - the Jeepney.

Administrative additions

We now have 4 administrators for this administration of the e round robin. The newly added ones are the bean, the dancer, and the south of far north. You may be able to get new posts and comments emailed to you.

Time zone

Since most of you are in the Central time zone, I changed the time zone settings for this blog to CST. Now when you create your posts, the time should be correct... I don't know if it automatically resets with daylight savings time or not... Now you guys won't have to publish all your posts with the wrong time. I'll check the time when I publish my posts.

Some other menu choices...

And here is a menu at another restaurant a few days later... Anyone in the mood for some skinless langgonisa? I guess I prefer it with the skin on.

KFC in Manila

I found my Philippines photo album!

Here is a KFC in Manila...

Dining in the Philippines

I believe this was Greg & Denise's 'Yellow Period'. Matching yellow T-shirts, yellow food, yellow environments. Also to be appreciated are the facial hair statements being expressed by the men... especially Greg's subtle statement of hipness with the moustache flowing gently into the generous sideburns.

Is anyone besides me wishing there was a way to determine easily if new comments have been added since one's last visit - or in the last 24 hours? There isn't a way to determine this is there?

Just in case...

Mark,

I wonder if we should set up a separate user for administrator that is not tied to you, doesn't have your moniker, and doesn't have your photo tied to it... just in case someone tries to pose as you in one of their posts or comments...

(By the way, I appreciate the nice things you said about me in the third comment of yesterday's post.)

A Challenge From the Sidelines

A seed of doubt has been planted in our minds as to whether or not that passenger in question is Dean (see comments from Monday's posting). I re-scanned the slide at a higher resolution and added a picture of Dean from a day or two later. You be the ref.

Who's Flying This Thing?!?

Three More on the Mountain

As I recall Bill quit early on. We thought a couple hours more and we'd be at the top, but that only got us about half way. We started to worry if we could make it to the top and back before dark and almost quit a few times. Here's three more I found, but I had to do some "cleanup".
None of us had climbed a mountain in awhile and we were continually being fooled by the sense that we were almost there when we weren't. By the way it was definitely my camera. I have the slides. In this shot I'm the one who is missing.
This is the spot where all thoughts of quitting vanished. About half-way between the middle of the picture and the left edge there is a mountain sheep watching our ascent. He's a lookout guard there to protect the herd. We started scrambling and within fifteen minutes we had more spectators.
