Waldo Park

Waldo Park consists of a solitary sequoia in Salem Oregon. Read about it here.

It can also be found in Wikipedia.

It was actually quite easy to find once I googled "Summer Street" and "Waldo" at the same time. It's kind of scary how little information one needs to find what one wants.





By the way Google Earth now has its own version of "Street View". Here's the tree from another view taken off of Google Earth.

Find the sign I've circled in the photo below. Tell us where the sign is and what it says. Hint: One of the words on the sign is 'Waldo'.

Wow!

I don't know how he did it but Dean did indeed find Willy. If you go to Google Earth, the first view is the entire world with the USA dead center. Don't go up or down, left or right, just zoom in more and more until you're about 12,000 feet up. To the right you should see the track and football field of the famed University of Kansas Jayhawks. At first I was going to do that, but I thought it would be too easy. Then I noticed a little to the left a smaller track and field. I went there and it is West Jr. High, home of the Warhawks. If I'm not mistaken here we are in the halls of West looking out the very door to the place where Willy once stood like a dork staring at the camera.

Where's Willy?

OK, let's get serious here. This kid with the backpack can be viewed on Google Maps Street Mode. He exists somewhere in cypberspace, somewhere in the world. I'm going to call him "Willy". To win the contest you have to either display a picture of him from a larger perspective and/or tell me a little more - in detail - about the environment in which he dwells. After about a week if there is no identification, I will give a few more details.

Waldo's Been Found

Thanks to Paul revealing his trick for capturing photos, I can now reveal the whereabouts of The Yankee Stadium Waldo.


A little past third base there is a Geico sign. Follow the "G" up about 22 rows.

(Her name is Michelle. She lives in Georgia and was visiting her brother Bill in New York who has seasons tickets. Michelle is a teacher, her brother is a dental technician.)

Waldo's in a wierd place

Notice the girl in the yellow shirt to the right of "Waldo". Her left hand is holding the railing. Well it appears that the railing is broken close to her hand. Even stranger, her right arm is growing out of her hip. And then notice a few rows above the girl in yellow, there's a lady with a black Yankees T-shirt on. She only has half a head! And below her. . .there's a guy with a blue T-shirt who has absolutely no head at all. All very strange.

Where's Waldo?

Fantastic web site, Dan! The Zoomable Yankee Stadium is amazing. One can actually zoom up on individuals in the stadium - and recognize them!

In Dan's latest challenge, Katie took care of the large catsup bottle pretty handily. Here's the new challenge - a little more difficult. Find this woman I've circled at Yankee Stadium. Her shirt was the closest I could come to a Waldo shirt.

A Cyberspace Experiment

Sometimes I just wander about the internet to see what I see for the fun of it. I especially like Google Earth. And Paul recently introduced me to street view of the major cities. It's amazing what you can find and how many tools there are for finding things. I was thinking it could be fun to use the entire earth via the internet to play a sort of "Where's Waldo". So. . .here's the challenge. Can you find this catsup bottle and tell us anything about it? (I used photoshop to delete some of the pertinent information on this photo.) You are invited to introduce your own challenge to this game.

José's first birthday

OK, finally some pictures of José!

We had our first birthday party for José on July 4th! Thanks to everyone who showed up and for all the gifts! He really made a haul!

Gwyn: José and his parents want to thank you for helping him unwrap his gifts!














We carried all the gifts up to the house and of course the first thing he went for was the Tupperware! But then later, he did play with his new toys!

Visiting Minnesota

I will try to post some of the better photos of our trip to Minnesota in June. Probably it will be a day to day diary if it gets finished.

On Saturday and Sunday there was an Ultimate Frisbee Tournament with about 35 schools. It is a pretty good game to play and watch it seems especially when you consider there are no referees on the fields!

Celebrating Spring

We survived another winter!! With the warmer temps I love to get out and enjoy nature. Of course Amy and I always love a good photo shoot as well. That dragon fly I discovered just resting on the porch. He was huge. He was a very good subject, sitting still while I got my shot. And as you can see the apple blossoms have come out to grace us with their presence. We have a lot to celebrate.

The Lyncher In Me

I was listening to MPR recently and my ears perked up when I heard 'Duluth' and 'lynching'. A man named Warren Read was being interviewed about his new book, The Lyncher In Me. I immediately realized I had to read it. It's amazing - growing up in Duluth and knowing almost nothing about the lynching of 1920. Did any of you ever learn about it in school? It seems like it would've been a great teaching opportunity. It should've been a required unit as part of the high school history curiculum.

The book was very interesting. Read wrote the book shortly after he discovered that his great grandfather had been one of the ring leaders of the mob - one of three people to spend a short time in prison for it. The questions started flooding into my mind. There were 10,000 people in the mob. Was our grandfather involved? Certainly he would have at least known people who were involved. Did dad ever discuss anything of what he'd heard of the lynching with any of you? It sounds like the girl who claimed she was raped lived real close to our house in West Duluth.

Unbelievably, the picture above was made into a postcard! Can you imagine sending a postcard like that?

In the book Mr. Read roams back and forth between the lynchings, his mother's dysfunctional family, and then his own dysfunctional upbringing.

A memorial has been established - the Clayton Jackson McGhie Memorial - to the memory of the three young men who were killed that day. It's right across the street from where the lynching took place (2nd Av E and 1st St I believe).
