Christmas Eve

Hear ye! Hear ye! The Lindstroms are extending an open invitation for a Christmas Eve party at our house. Christmas Eve falls on a Sunday this year. We'll be checking around in mid December to see who's interested.

Another old-timer

I may be old now, but I have never appeared in the "Bygones" column in the newspaper

John Morton - Renaissance Man

Like many a person in that era, John Morton, Faith's Fantastic Forebear, dabbled in science and had a great number of patents in his name.

Who is this man?

I realize this question is totally unfair, but who is this man?

Going back, going way back

This is from a batch of half a dozen slides. There are no numbers. There is no date. Most of the photos, including this one, are from Chub Lake.
But then there were two slides from this location, which I am certain is Mineral Street. So. . .when were these pictures taken and who are those people at Mineral Street?

One If By Land

On that famous night of April 18, 1775, it had been determined that if the land was snowless then Paul Revere would ride his horse to warn the troops but if snow was still on the ground then it would have been Faith's Fearless Forebear, an expert skier. There was no snow and the rest is history.

Faith's Famous Forebear

Paul was being modest when he merely mentioned that John Morton signed the Declaration of Independence, and held various legal offices. If you check out the internet you will find he had a long and illustrious life with numerous achievements. For example: he was one of the founding members of a "stringed quartet" known as the Electric Eels.

Camping with Steve

When were these pictures taken?

Kids On A Couch

Ok here's where we test our mettle. This is from a batch of 7 rectangular numbered slides with no date. All it says on the back is "Color Transparency". They are all really dark and needed work to bring out the light. I'm guessing Paul has the rest of this batch and these were left out cuz of the darkness. So. . .when were these picture taken?

Cool Cold Colder

Saturday about noon the trees and branches are frosted. This was the first snow and it may stay on the ground.

This is the 31st, halloween. The lake is about 1/2 iced over and making more ice.

November 1 and the lake is all ice, less than an inch thick and not strong enough. My boot was soaked.

This was taken by the camera on ice.

Does this help?

Oops. I should have noticed this photo sooner. This should resolve a few questions. But I still can't upload here.

Joe Cool (Turned Around)

Guess what I did? I posted this photo to the beta version web site I created and then linked to it. I guess that will have to do until the posting problem is solved. This photo is from a batch of 5 "near-orphans" numbered 4 through 8. The month and year is marked. Let's see who's the first to guess within a month or two.

TEST

Seems to work for me.

Clever Clue of the Month

It worked for me! The photo below is about 85kb. This is from our North Shore trip last month.
What's a three letter word for 'One with a pole position?' or a four letter word for 'Fix for good?' Find out at the web-site and while you're at it vote for the clever clue of the month.

I Got Problems

I have been trying to upload more pictures to the e round robin since last thursday numerous times every day. When I click to upload the picture the window just freezes up. I tried making the picture smaller and smaller until I was down to 40 kb. But in the past it's always let me through if the photo is around 100 kb. Is anyone else having trouble too? Or. . .would someone else try to post a photo and report?

After entering the above paragraph, I went to Blogger Knowledge and found a letter apologizing for the huge problems because of a massive blogspot crash last week. That may have something to do with my problem. They've got an entirely new software system almost ready to replace the old one. Here's a few paragraphs from the letter:

The news gets better: We foresaw the need for the long-term solution, well, a long time ago. Long enough ago that it’s almost done, and you can use it as the new version of Blogger in beta. If you can switch to it (see requirements) you really should. The new version of Blogger is better in almost* every way, including reliability. (It’s worth pointing out that none of this past week’s trouble affected the new version of Blogger or its blogs.)

It’s been a bad week for Blogger, and, as I hope you can tell, we’re not denying it. Instead, we have taken and will continue to take specific steps that make Blogger a more reliable, overall better service for you to use.

We should consider switching over to this new beta version. I wasn't sure if it was a personal issue for me, or if we'd have to do it as a group. Would all of our previous posts transfer over too? Perhaps some of you could also check this out at this spot.

Happy Birthday to Me

In the comments below I declared Paul the winner with a guess of August 1971. The photos were developed in September of 1971.

Though I was a little baffled by this picture. I left for Alaska that June. This must have been my birthday that April. The lesson being, the developing date is not necessarily near the date the photo was taken. This photo was number 4. The Travailles was number 18.

At Last

This slide had a date posted on it. Let's see who can guess closest to the year and month when this photo was taken. Jonathan could identify all the Stynsbergs in this photo but that stray boy in the front baffled him. I told him, "You see him every Sunday in church!" And that did it.

Finally, I'm beginning to scan the "Stynsberg" slides. (I'm using "Stynsberg" as a shorthand for slides taken by Stynsbergs before or after our families merged) It's a good thing too cuz there's been a lack of content to the family blog lately. This should keep things hopping for a few months.

Scanning these slides is for me. . .complicated. So I'd like to take a little time, at the beginning, to clarify some things.

1. With the slides of my youth I knew instantly the emotional value of any particular photo. But there are many of these slides that could be invaluable to some of you and I wouldn't have a clue. That's why the plan is for me to scan them and then pass them all on to Paul. Paul will incorporate them into the other slides he scanned, perhaps post a few more to the family blog, and eventually pass them all onto the rest of us.

2. The boxes of slides I got from Dean were a jumbled mess. I spent quite some time trying to sort them.
A. Thankfully, some have dates stamped on them. But sometimes there were three or four "packets" of slides with the same date. I tried to guess by content and number which went with which.
B. There were many that had no date stamped. But it's amazing how much one can sort by just comparing the frames. Almost every "Packet" frame was slightly different from every other.
C. When it comes to 35mm film it's amazing how often the slides of that era varied. Some were 35 mm square, others 35 mm rectangle. The slide I'm showing with this post was 27 by 27. (which have to be scanned individually in advanced mode!)
D. And eventually we'll come to the slides circa 5th street which are all 24 by 12 and have no markings whatever. I'm hoping you all will be able to help me group those.
E. And last but not least there were "orphans". A slide or two that bore few markings and no relation to the larger packets. I'm guessing that some of these orphans belong with packets that Paul has.

3. The conclusion of item 2 above is that I'm hoping, in the posting of samples from these slides, that some of you will be able to establish context and date when it's unclear.

4. Regarding the "Lindstrom" slides, I have a few additions to make and then I will burn them to CD and send them on to everyone to do with as they please.

Video post test...

Disk Drop

Test of first video post.

I just wanted to see if I could post a video to the blog. It's a pretty short one.
