The e Round Robin

College Downtown
Josie was dropped off downtown saturday at North Central University. Denise and I are currently empty- nesters! (for the first time)

Colleges Bound

On Thursday we dropped Tyler off at Providence. Of course we had to deliver a sofa, too, since he's an RA this year and 'all RAs need a sofa in their room for when people stop in to chat'.

The rest of the weekend was spent dropping Alyssa off at Northwestern. She seems to have real nice roommates - I think we've left her in good hands. It was a pretty quiet ride home, though, after a tear-filled good-bye.

Yes, I'm sure care packages and home-cooked dinners would be appreciated.

College Bound!

Peter is off to Stout! He left a week early because he decided he wanted to run cross country and the athletes were to show up early. It's exciting, but the rest of us are a little sad too.

Hey Paul, give us a little info on Alyssa (keeping in mind this can be read by anybody). She's a long way from home. Is there anything us metro people can do to be supportive? Care Packages? An invite to dinner? A place to sleep?

Steve's Birthday Part Two

High School Graduation

College

Peter Royce was named after Grandpa Per (Peter) Lindstrom, Helge Peter, and Stephen Peter.

This picture from the Alaska trip is, in my opinion, the classic Stephen pose, at rest quietly observing the situation.

Surprise

Steve's good friends, the Krusz's, had a surprise party for Steve last Saturday. We were invited but unable to attend. They planned to spend the evening telling Steve Stories. As our contribution I sent some photos they probably hadn't seen hoping it would induce Steve to tell them some Steve Stories. I' ll post the first part tonight and the rest soon.

Mancala

OK. I played Mancala. I played three games. I let the web player give me hints. The first game, using all his hints, he beat me by one. The second game, I didn't always take the hint and lost big. I also noticed that I had missed the rule that if the opponent lands in one of their empty pits, they can take all of my seeds in the corresponding pit. Ouch! That's why I lost so big! The third game, armed with this information, and considering the hints, I won pretty big!

Happy Birthday Steve!!

I believe it was Steve's 60th birthday today!! Oops, looks like I missed it by a few minutes... Happy birthday Steve!! Pig roast celebration in October!!

A Memorial

Nellie was hit by a car Friday night. She died moments later. She was the best cat I ever had and will be missed by all, including Chloe (dog) and Sophie (cat).
She had unique ways of telling us she wanted to go outside. She learned early on if she simply played the piano, we would let her out. If the keyboard cover was down, she would just jump up on the hamper and fiddle with our bedroom door knob.
I go for walks every day. When I would get within a half block of home she would always come running to meet me. I'd pick her up, give her a big hug, tell her what a good kitty she was, and put her back down. I think I'll miss this the most about her.

Canoe Trip - Part III

Does anyone know what kind of insect this is?

JaNae and Alyssa play mancala using an egg carton.

One of my favorite aspects of canoe trips is large snapping turtles.

I haven't had any luck fishing this summer. It didn't really matter - some of the others had some luck and we had a delicious meal.

Crossword puzzles: don't leave home without them.

Canoe Trip - Part I

Last week Alyssa and JaNae's SS class went on a canoe trip at Voyageur's National Park. I was invited to join them. We began last Wednesday at Crane Lake. The red line above traces our journey. We returned to Crane Lake about noon on Sunday.
There were 16 of us. I could've made this picture brighter but decided I kind of liked it dark. By the way, have any of you had any problems uploading pictures? I had problems with some larger ones earlier so I made them smaller and was able to upload them. The above picture confused me - I tried uploading the smaller version - it didn't work. So I tried uploading the larger version and it worked!
This is JaNae and Rose jumping off a cliff. I actually tried to post this picture with part II (below) first. It didn't work. So I had to create part I...

Canoe Trip - Part II

Here is Alyssa jumping off the cliff.

There are some ancient Native American pictographs on the rocks. About 5' above the surface of the water on the rocks ahead are some pictographs.

Here is a close-up of the pictograph.

Here is Bryan, the leader of the trip, planning the course of action. I'll add another part or two soon.

A Few Comments

1. Jo came downstairs while I was viewing the site and I began to show her what has been posted recently. (She is not a computer person.) And as I moved backwards through the posts I came upon spectacular photos from Mark that I never saw before. How did that happen? I thought, after Dean issued a warning about previous posts, that I had gone back and looked. Did I not go back? Were others posted afterwards?

2. Mark, I would really really really appreciate it if you could copy your photos of our trip on a cd and send them down here. If you do, I'll make sure the others get a copy of it.

3. An odd thing. . .whenever I post something, I can return to the site hours later and my post still doesn't appear on my computer. For example, my post of old Alaska Highway photos was posted before supper and it is now 10 p.m. and I still can't see it. The wierd thing is this. . .once when this happened I went to my edit place and viewed what I had tried to post and others were already adding comments while it still didn't exist on my computer!

4. I doubt if it is possible, but if anybody could figure out a way to save the record of what's gone on at this site since Mark started it a year ago, it would be a valuable artifact for posterity.

The Good Old Days

I'll get back to Paul's Challenge in a bit. I'm also, by the way, almost finished scanning my photos, so the Stynsberg photos from the late 60's will be scanned soon. But for now, I thought that those who have crossed the Alaska Highway would find these photos from around 1955 interesting.

I might have shown this one before, but I'm not going to take the time to check. I think this is Watson Lake, but I'm not positive. Notice that the fast food joint had a drive through window.

And speaking of Watson Lake. . .there weren't as many signs posted back then.

This may be the gold dredge (pre restoration) some of us toured up near Dawson.

Look what I found!

It's been awhile since anyone posted a cartoon... I was driving through Orr on Sunday and picked up a paper.

Alaska pictures, Pig Roast

I don't know if anyone else missed this... I just scrolled down the blog and discovered a bunch of pictures of our Alaska trip that Mark posted of Exit Glacier, the Seward boat ride, Matanuska camping, Dawson City, etc. I think Mark post dated these posts.

Early notice! We are planning another pig roast this year. Two years ago, the excuse was that Jean and I turned 50 and Kurt turned 40. The excuse this time is that Steve is turning 60! It will probably be the first weekend in October.

TORNADO!

A tornado touched down on our neighbors, Warroad, 20 miles to the east last night. My friend, Chuck, took these first two photos from his airplane this morning.

The changing rooms for the outdoor swimming pool - destroyed.

Some Marvin Windows trailers tipped over. I don't know if there were windows inside.

More tipped trailers.

Thankfully, there wasn't a whole parking lot full of cars...

Another view of the changing rooms.

A flipped camper.

Thankfully, no injuries have been reported.

Bear

We saw a bunch of bears! Notice especially the picture of a black bear next to Dean's butt. We had gotten so used to seeing bear that when this blacky crossed the road Dean and Kurt used it as an opportunity to "clean up".
