I think I've got it! A mere two weeks and it's solved. We were putting away Christmas stuff and I noticed a family resemblence with our nativity scene and the five cows. My (tentative) conclusion is that it is a member of the nativity.

That's a picture to frame!! What did Jo think about that? Is that hand/cow thingy-majigy going to be a permanent fixture in the nativity set-up?
