Grace

This picture was taken in 1946 - before dad met mom. Dad took a little trip to Illinois. (Dean's timing in bringing up Chicago is interesting.)

About a year after they first met, dad and mom took a trip to Chicago. On July 11th (1947, I think) mom wrote the following in her journal:

Got up and took our time about getting ready. Met John's old girlfriend, Grace ______ about 10 after which we ate breakfast. Then we went to Moody Memorial church for the service. Dr. Ironsides couldn't speak as he broke his arm and was in the hospital so a Rev. Lundquist from a Free Church in Chicago spoke. After church we cheched out of the rooms and then drove to the Aquarium and saw fish from all over the world and to the Field Museum and saw some stuffed animals--very interesting. Finally we started on our way for Maranatha. Of course, we had to stop on the way about 4:30 and ate a combination dinner and supper which wasn't any too hot, kind of a crummy joint. We got to Maranatha about 9 or so, checked into our rooms, got unpacked etc. John and I went down on the beach for a while. were supposed to be in at 11 but didn't get in until 11:30 so were balled (sic) out a little so got in at the right time the rest of the week.

I don't remember hearing of Grace. Maybe you know this. When Ralph and I were going to be married, Ralph talked to Dad asking to marry his daughter. Later Dad talked to me about marrying Ralph. Dad's Mom had told him that he should not date Lorraine because she didn't think she was his type!

Another aside, I spoke to Lorraine a couple of weeks ago when were in Duluth. She remembers people from childhood and of course their names. She had spoken recently to a man that had worked for your Dad, Helge. He remembers what a good man he was. If I find his name I will tell you. By the way, do you get Becky Osell's missions letter, anyone. She had a nice picture of her family taken recently with Mabel in it. Interested anyone?

Did I read that correctly? Did you say that our dad (John) knew Lorraine way back in the 40s and considered dating her once?

You're right! They went to Baptist youth activities. Lorraine never talked to me about possibly dating Dad but Dad talked to me about it. He may not have planned on dating her but Grandma Stynsberg didn't apparently think it was a good match!

Well, now I'll have to look much more closely at some of these pictures. Wouldn't it be a hoot if Lorraine showed up in one of them?
